Breathe your way to rest

Conscious breathing, during a massage, usually results in a quieting of the mind and relaxation of the body’s muscular system.

One of my clients fights against this, saying she “doesn’t want to miss the massage, by dozing off.”

Is fighting to keep the mind active, instead of surrendering to the power of the breath, actually “missing out” on the deeper benefits of regular bodywork?

When I’m ON the massage table, I focus on my breath so that my quiet mind and relaxed body can find that sweet spot of surrender, release, and peace.  And if I dip into unconscious sleep, for a moment, that’s a bonus!  Unlike nighttime sleep, I’m at least partly conscious of how relaxed I am.

Breath is the gateway through which a quiet mind, and relaxed body, re-connect, re-generate and, perhaps, reveal things that get obscured by stress and restlessness.
